Jump to RecipeJust like most people, I did not, for a very long time, know that I can make frozen chicken or meat using my Instant Pot. There was no looking back once I learned this. I now always make my chicken wings in the Instant Pot. I just love how tender they always turn out. The best part is actually being able to cook dinner quickly or cook food in the morning, while we are getting ready for work.

To make the honey and garlic sauce:

- ⅛ cup coconut aminos sauce - (use soy sauce for a non-paleo variation).
Slurry - optional:
- 1 teaspoon tapioca flour - optional to thicken the sauce
- 4 teaspoons water - optional to thicken the sauce
To garnish the chicken wings:
- 1-2 tablespoons chopped scallions

How to make frozen chicken wings in the Instant Pot: With three simple steps - basically pressure cooking the chicken wings, making the sauce, then broiling. Broiling is an optional step but I highly recommend that you do not skip it as it helps crispen up the skin.
1. Pressure cook the frozen chicken wings
- Set the inner pot of the Instant Pot in place and pour one cup of water into it. Set the trivet or rack on top of the inner pot.
- Lay the frozen chicken wings on the trivet or rack. If you can, separate them so they lay out flat.
- Close the lid, making sure to set it to SEAL.
- Press the pressure cook button and set it to cook on HIGH for 11 minutes. The Instant Pot will take some time to come to pressure and will start counting the time once it has come to pressure.
- Once the cooking time is over, allow the Instant Pot to naturally pressure release (NPR) for 5 minutes before doing a quick pressure release (QPR).
2. Prepare for broiling
- While the chicken wings are pressure cooking, set the oven to broil. Line a baking tray with parchment paper or foil and place a baking rack on top. Switch on the oven to broil when the cooking time left is 5 minutes.
- Once the chicken wings are done cooking and the natural pressure release time is over, open the lid and carefully lift the trivet with the wings and set it aside.
- Set aside the water for other recipes like soups.
3. Make the sauce and serve
Next, go ahead and make the honey and garlic sauce.
- Program the Instant Pot to Saute for 5 minutes. To the inner pot, stir-in honey, coconut sugar, minced garlic, minced ginger and coconut aminos.
- Use a whisk to combine until the sauce is thick (this will take about 2 minutes).
- If the sauce is too liquid for your liking, make a slurry by combining 1 teaspoon tapioca flour with four teaspoons of water and stir this into the sauce. Make sure to whisk so there are no lumps of slurry. If the sauce thickens before the 5 minutes saute time is over, simply press the cancel button.
- Add the chicken wings back to the Instant Pot and carefully combine with the sauce. Transfer them to a grilling rack. Lay each of the chicken wings on the rack, leaving enough space between.
- Brush or spoon some of the sauce on the chicken wings which are now on the baking tray. Broil in the oven for about 3-5 minutes, or until you get the desired level of crispiness or brown. Use tongs to flip to the other side and broil again for about 3-5 minutes.
- Use the rest of the sauce for dipping.
- Garnish with sliced scallions or sesame seeds or both and serve whilst still hot.

Frequently asked questions:
- Can you cook frozen chicken in the Instant Pot? Yes, you can. Bear in mind that the Instant Pot will take longer to come to pressure because the frozen chicken meat considerably lowers the temperature in the pot. The cooking time, however, still remains the same once the Instant Pot has come to pressure. Check out my juicy and tender Instant Pot Frozen Chicken Thighs recipe.
- How long do you cook chicken wings in an Instant Pot? Fresh or thawed chicken wings require 8 minutes per 450g/ 1 lb to cook at high pressure with a 5-10 minute Natural Pressure Release (NPR). Frozen chicken wings require 11 (for each 450g/1 lb) minutes to cook in the Instant Pot.
- Can you double up the batch? You can double up or make more of the batch. The cooking time, in this case, remains the same. Only thing is, the Instant Pot will take longer to pressure up. It is better to have your chicken wings frozen in single pieces and not in one big lump of ice. I, however, experimented with cooking the chicken wings frozen in one lump, and they still turned out great.
- Storing leftovers. Kept in a suitable airtight container, these chicken wings will keep in the fridge for 4-5 days. They can be kept in the freezer for 4-5 months.
